Caridean shrimps in the food of demersal fish off the Belgian coast: 1. Gadiformes OMA
Redant, F..
The report provides information on the importance of Caridean shrimps in the food of juvenile <i>Merlangius merlangus</i> (whiting), <i>Trisopterus luscus</i> (bib), juvenile <i>Gadus morhua</i> (cod) and <i>Ciliata mustela</i> (five-bearded rockling) in the Belgian coastal waters, as well as some biometric data related to stomach content and composition (stomach weight, weight of Caridean shrimps per stomach, number of Caridean shrimps per stomach in relation to predator size). The results clearly demonstrate the importance of Caridean shrimps, especially <i>Crangon crangon</i>, as a food source for Gadoid fish species in inshore waters.

Caridean shrimps in the food of demersal fish off the Belgian coast: 2. Perciformes OMA
Redant, F..
The report provides information on the importance of Caridean shrimps in the food of juvenile <i>Trigla species</i> (gurnard), <i>Agonus cataphractus</i> (hook-nose) and <i>Liparis liparis</i> (sea snail) in the Belgian coastal waters, and gives some biometric data related to stomach content and composition. The results show the importance of Caridean shrimps, especially <i>Crangon crangon</i>, as a food source for perciform fish species in inshore waters. The records of the chameleon prawn, <i>Hippolyte varians</i> in fish stomachs and in trawl and grab samples are compared, and the actual knowledge on the distribution and abundance of this shrimp species is discussed.

Community structure and intertidal zonation of the macrobenthos on a macrotidal, ultra-dissipative sandy beach: summer-winter comparison OMA
Degraer, S.; Mouton, I.; De Neve, L.; Vincx, M..
Community structure and intertidal zonation of the macrobenthos on a macrotidal, ultra-dissipative beach were studied. On the beach of De Panne, Belgium, six transects perpendicular to the waterline (each with five stations) were sampled in September 1995 (summer) and March 1996 (winter). The 30 stations were distributed across the continuum from mean high water spring to mean low water spring in order to sample the macrobenthos at different levels of elevation. The 39 species found had total densities up to 5,500 ind m-2 in summer and 1,400 ind m-2 in winter. The highest densities were found in the spionid polychaetes <i>Scolelepis squamata</i> and <i>Spio filicornis</i>, the nephtyid...

Considérations sur l'état bactériologique de quelques plages belges OMA
Dartevelle, Z..
Beach samples from the Belgian coast and the Nieuwpoort Channel have been examined for (a) coliform and other common bacteria and (b) more serious pathogens, to determine from their distribution the influence of season, tide, presence of human and other animals and of effluent. There were more coliforms in summer than in spring. State of tides had no significant effect on coliform numbers. The dry sand above HWM, occupied by holidaymakers, was as polluted as intertidal sand. Sand in the Channel near a sewage outfall was rich in coliforms. <i>Salmonella paratyphi </i> B was also found, but no <i>Shigella</i> spp., although <i>Shigella phages</i> were present.

Ecological problems of a nuclear power station: a basis for comparing offshore sites OMA
Van Broekhoven, L.; Bastin, A.; Lefevere, S.J..
Seven possible sitings of a nuclear power station on the Belgian coast, or offshore, were postulated and compared in 1975 in a technology assessment approach. In addition, a more detailed ecological case-study was made for one of these seven sites. An ecological (biological, sedimentological and geophysical) inventory was compiled together with evaluation of possible effects of the warm water outfall in the particular area. To facilitate a more accurate prediction model, and an eventual control of all ecological influences, a series of continuous and comprehensive survey programmes are needed over several years.

Erosie aan de Belgische kust OMA
De Moor, G..
Intense residual erosion attacks several sections of the Belgian coast. During the last decades this coast has been hit over several kilometers at Knokke, at Bredene-De Haan, at Lombardsijde, at Koksijde and at De Panne. A sequence of beach budgets shows the phenomenon and its importance and proves that different morphodynamic sections follow one another all along the rectilinear coast. The author ascribes every erosive section to an erosive megaprotuberans attacking the coast over a more or less long distance during a more or less long time span. He proves that such megaprotuberans develops gradually, that it is part of a cyclic macroprocess of coastal evolution that lasts several decades, sweeps the cost and whose aggressive phase is followed up by a...

Etude écologique d'un brise-lames de la côte belge: 2. Biologie et développement saisonnier des espèces OMA
Daro, M.H..
In a previous publication we focussed on the description and the study of the zonation of the organisms and their living conditions on a wave-breaker in Knokke. We showed that a certain number of dominant species are situated at exact levels of the wave-breaker, levels that we designated under the name of stages: 1. Algae stage2. Barnacle stage3. Mussel stage4. Tubularia stageEach of these stages is subdivided in characterised zones by particular associations of organisms. We described these organisms in the first part. We are interested in the second report to define the role of each of the partners of an association, emphasizing the biology and the ecology and the interaction between the different species.

Horizontal distribution of the Plathelminthes in a sandy beach of the Belgian coast OMA
Jouk, P.E.H.; Martens, P.M.; Schockaert, E.R..
Studies of the horizontal distribution of the Plathelminthes in sandy beaches have up to now mainly been carried out on the German island of Sylt where the beaches consist of a steep "Prallhang" and a flat wadden area. Beaches of the Belgian coast are very flat, only gently sloping and with a different sediment compared to the Sylt beaches. This study reports on the distribution of the turbellarians in such a flat beach; the discussion is mainly focussed on the comparison with the results of the German investigators.

Integration of continuous seismic profiling in geotechnical investigations off the Belgian coast OMA
Henriet, J.-P.; Bastin, A.; De Rouck, J..
Continuous seismic profiling using boomer, sparker or pinger sources has gained widespread use in marine site investigations. At a reconnaissance stage, a grid of continuous seismic traverses with adequate orientation and mesh size is able to yield a coherent picture of the structural conditions of subsurface, allowing the definition of areas of main prospective interest. In the early stages of detailed site investigations, seismic profiling forms an efficient tool for the planning of high-cost offshore drilling and penetration testing programs. Keys to success in seismic data acquisition are a matter of careful balancing and matching of source/receiver parameters with the marine and geological environment and with the geotechnical penetration/resolution...

La croissance de la crevette grise (<i>Crangon crangon</i> L.) au large de la côte belge OMA
Schockaert, E..
The carapace length of the shrimp is directly proportional to the total length. At each moulting, a certain number of segments is added to the exopodite of the antennula. The frequency of moulting is a function of the temperature. If the mean monthly temperatures off the Belgian coast are known, this will enable us to draw a growth curve of <i>Crangon crangon</i>.Connecting the modes in the successive population curves gives a growth curve with only relative value, but it nevertheless confirms the one obtained by the preceding method.

L'association des amphipodes et des <i>Polydora ciliata</i> à la côte belge OMA
Daro, M.H..
The worm <i>Polydora ciliata</i> is colonized, at the Belgian coast, by 2 amphipods: <i>Jassa falcata</i> in the surf zone and <i>Corophium insidiosum</i> in calm waters. This difference is caused essentially by the morphological characteristics of the 2 amphipodes: <i>Jassa falcata</i> possesses a pair of very strong gnathopodes II, allowing it to hold on firmly in strong currents, while <i>Corophium insidiosum</i> lacks these characteristics.

Le recouvrement biogène le long de la côte belge OMA
Lefevere, S..
Marine fouling causes economical problems. Fouling diminishes the efficiency of propulsion of the ships. It enlarges the cost in fuel. Another effect is the loss in time and money because it necessitates frequent docking of the ships. These organisms increase the corrosion of metal in seawater. The damage to the timber constructions by marine borers causes renewed change of the piles. Therefore information was given about the principal fouling organisms at the Belgian coast. Some biologic aspects of the fouling were reviewed as the biotic succession by the different communities, the relation of fouling growth to local environments, the vertical zonation and the settling behavior of larvae controlled by salinity, temperature and light.

Coppejans, E.; De Vos, D..
The Rhodophyceae <i>Acrochaetium secundatum</i> (Lyngb.) Näg. and <i>Aglaothamnium scopulorum</i> (C. Ag.) G. Feldman.-Maz. var. <i>polyspermum</i> (C. Ag.) Halos have frequently been collected along the pier of Zeebrugge (Belgium) in 1977, 1978 and 1979. Both taxa have not been mentioned along the Belgian coast until now. The problem of their distinction from closely related species is discussed.
